Formation of students' spatial thinking using immersive vr technologies: a pedagogical perspective
Abstract
The relevance of the study is determined by the growing importance of spatial thinking in the professional training of specialists across various fields and the increasing integration of immersive VR technologies into educational practice. Three-dimensional digital environments expand opportunities for developing spatial visualization, mental rotation, spatial orientation, and spatial modeling; however, the educational effectiveness of VR largely depends on the pedagogical approaches used for its integration into the learning process. The purpose of the article is to identify the pedagogical conditions that ensure the effective use of immersive virtual reality technologies for developing learners' spatial thinking and to substantiate their potential for improving the educational process. The study employed methods of analysis and systematization of contemporary scientific literature, comparative analysis of pedagogical approaches to the use of VR technologies, generalization of findings reported in Ukrainian and international studies, and logical synthesis to formulate the author's conclusions. The information base consisted of scientific publications, as well as materials from international educational projects and practical cases of virtual reality implementation. The role of spatial thinking in the formation of professional competencies was investigated, and the pedagogical potential of immersive VR technologies for developing its key components was analyzed. Contemporary approaches to integrating VR into the educational process were systematized, and their educational opportunities were identified. It was found that the greatest educational effect is achieved when virtual environments are used to perform practice-oriented and professionally focused tasks requiring spatial analysis, modeling, and decision-making. It was established that the wider implementation of VR is constrained by the insufficient methodological development of instructional models, the complexity of assessing spatial thinking, the limited adaptability of educational platforms, the high cost of equipment and digital content, the need for teacher training, and the lack of long-term empirical studies. It was demonstrated that improving the effectiveness of VR implementation requires its systematic integration into the educational process, the development of adaptive learning scenarios, the improvement of methodological support, and the application of modern approaches to learning assessment. It was concluded that virtual reality technologies have considerable potential for developing spatial thinking and improving the quality of professional education. Prospects for further research include the development of standardized methods for assessing spatial thinking, the investigation of the long-term educational impact of VR, and the study of opportunities for personalizing the learning process through the use of artificial intelligence technologies.
