OROPHARYNGEAL HEMANGIOMA: A CASE REPORT
Abstract
Background. Hemangioma is a congenital vascular anomaly characterized by hyperplasia of endothelial cells. It is rarely found in adults, particularly in oropharynx. Adult hemangiomas do not regress spontaneously but progress relatively slowly and they are often asymptomatic. Materials and methods. This paper reports a rare clinical case of lobular hemangioma of the palatopharyngeal arch in a 51-year-old woman. Diagnostic evaluation of the neoplasm included an endoscopic examination and radiological imaging. treatment consisted of complete surgical excision using a cold plasma device followed by histopathological verification. Preoperative biopsy was avoided due to the high risk of massive bleeding. Conclusions. For localised pedunculated oropharyngeal hemangiomas, cold-plasma surgery is an effective surgical treatment modality, providing a controlled effect on tissues, the possibility of simultaneous hemostasis and a favorable course of the postoperative period. The rarity of hemangioma localization on the posterior palatine arch in an adult patient determines the scientific and practical value of the presented clinical observation.
