The Upregulation of Two CYP6 Genes Is Associated with the Response to Broflanilide in Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel, 1912) (Diptera: Tephritidae)
Abstract
Simple Summary The oriental fruit fly is a serious quarantine pest of fruits and vegetables, and insecticides remain important for its management. Broflanilide is a relatively new insecticide, but little is known about how this pest responds to this compound. We compared gene expression in the midgut and fat body of flies that survived after broflanilide exposure with the gene expression of the control group. Two cytochrome P450 genes showed increased expression. Reducing the expression of either gene increased mortality after broflanilide exposure. Computer simulations also suggested that the proteins encoded by these genes may interact with the active metabolite of broflanilide. These findings identify two candidate genes associated with the response of the oriental fruit fly to broflanilide and provide a basis for further functional studies.
