Climate change and its impact on regional policy
Abstract
Climate change, particularly in recent years, poses a significant threat to human life worldwide, with the Mediterranean region being especially vulnerable. This concern has been highlighted by the United Nations and other international organizations, despite numerous conferences have been held since the Earth Summit in 1992, including the Kyoto and Paris Agreements, as well as the Sharm El Sheikh recommendations. As the phenomenon of global warming intensifies, fears grow regarding its catastrophic impacts. The Arab and African regions are at the heart of these changes, having experienced severe heat waves, droughts, thunderstorms, wildfires, and floods that have caused extensive damage to infrastructure and resulted in loss of life and property. To effectively manage climate crises related to change and their impact on regional policies, these countries must increase investments to achieve sustainable development goals in the Mediterranean basin. This includes accelerating regional adaptation to environmental changes through the implementation of various development plans and the adoption of public policies aimed at managing these impacts. The ultimate goal is to enable individuals and communities to live with dignity while ensuring political, economic, and social stability for all members of society, both regionally and locally. In this context, we will explore, through sociological perspectives, the issues of climate change and the exacerbation of global warming and El Niño phenomena, examining their effects on regional policies and how these policies adapt to climatic and environmental changes.
