Abstract

Students’ reading interest is an important factor in supporting successful learning. However, the development of a literacy culture in Islamic boarding schools still faces various challenges, such as limited reading materials, busy student activities, and the lack of optimal literacy learning strategies. This study aims to describe the existence of literacy-based learning in fostering students’ reading interest and to identify its impact on students’ reading interest at Raudatul Ilmi NW Sayong Islamic Boarding School. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive qualitative research design. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, and then analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that literacy-based learning has been implemented through the reading of classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning) using the bandongan, sorogan, and halaqah methods, reading textbooks, text discussions, reading analysis activities, and text-based assignments. These activities have become an integral part of the boarding school's learning culture. Literacy-based learning has also had a positive impact on students’ reading interest, as indicated by increased reading habits, improved reading comprehension skills, stronger reading motivation, and the establishment of informal reading communities within the boarding school environment. Nevertheless, several obstacles remain, including limited reading material collections, students’ busy schedules, and the uneven understanding among teachers regarding innovative literacy learning strategies. Therefore, it can be concluded that literacy-based learning plays an important role in fostering students’ reading interest and has become an essential part of the learning tradition at Raudatul Ilmi NW Sayong Islamic Boarding School.
