Temporal trend of violence due to neglect/abandonment in older women in Brazil (2009-2022)
Abstract
ABSTRACT Objectives: to analyze the temporal trend of reported cases of violence due to neglect/abandonment against older women in Brazil between 2009 and 2022. Methods: an ecological time-series study and spatial analysis using data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System. Prais-Winsten regression was used to estimate the Annual Percentage Change (APC) in violence rates among women aged 60 or older according to Brazilian regions. Results: 34,860 cases were recorded, with the highest occurrence in the Southeast and a more pronounced proportional growth in the Northeast (APC: 31.48%). Most episodes occurred in the home (80.2%), with offenders being a family member in 67.5% of cases, and 42% of victims reported repeated violence. Conclusions: a growing and uneven trend was observed in reports of violence due to neglect and abandonment against older women in Brazil, highlighting the persistence of this violence.
