Abstract

The success of Nile tilapia farming is highly dependent on water quality, as it significantly affects fish growth and health. In Janti Village, Polanharjo District, Klaten Regency, water quality monitoring is still carried out manually, causing changes in water conditions to be detected late and potentially reducing aquaculture productivity. This study aims to design and implement an Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring and control system for real-time monitoring of water quality in Nile tilapia ponds. The system also automatically controls a water pump based on sensor readings to improve the effectiveness of water quality management. This study employed the prototype method, with data collected through observation, interviews, and literature review. The system was developed using an ESP32 microcontroller integrated with a PH-4502C pH sensor, a DS18B20 temperature sensor, a SEN-0189 turbidity sensor, and an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor. Sensor data were transmitted to Google Sheets for storage and displayed through the Telegram application for monitoring and user notifications. The testing results showed that the pH sensor achieved an accuracy of 94.65% with a MAPE value of 5.35%, the DS18B20 temperature sensor achieved an accuracy of 99.21% with a MAPE value of 0.79%, and the ultrasonic sensor achieved an accuracy of 97.84% with a MAPE value of 2.16%. The turbidity sensor was also able to classify water conditions into clean, normal, and dirty categories. Based on the implementation and testing results, the developed system successfully performed real-time water quality monitoring and control, thereby helping Nile tilapia farmers maintain water quality.
