Performance Evaluation of Unsignaled Intersection Four in Pagandon Village – Kadipaten
Abstract
The increasing growth of vehicle movements due to urban development and regional connectivity has created significant challenges for transportation systems, particularly at unsignalized intersections. Intersections with high traffic demand and uncontrolled vehicle movements may experience congestion, delays, and reduced safety performance. The four-way unsignalized intersection in Pagandon Village, Kadipaten District, Majalengka Regency, is one of the locations affected by increasing traffic intensity due to regional development and improved accessibility. This study aims to evaluate the operational performance of the Pagandon four-way unsignalized intersection and determine appropriate improvement strategies based on traffic performance indicators. The research employed a quantitative approach through field observations and traffic data collection, including traffic volume, intersection geometry, capacity, degree of saturation, and delay analysis. The collected data were analyzed using the 2023 Indonesian Road Capacity Guidelines (Pedoman Kapasitas Jalan Indonesia, PKJI 2023) method. The results show that the intersection has a total capacity of 3,012 satuan mobil penumpang (smp)/hour, with an observed traffic flow of 2,255 smp/hour, resulting in a remaining capacity of 757 smp/hour. The degree of saturation value of 0.749 indicates that the intersection is approaching saturation conditions. The southern approach contributes the highest traffic demand, accounting for 53.4% of the total intersection traffic flow, followed by the western approach with 28.8%. Although the intersection capacity remains acceptable, uncontrolled traffic movements generate operational conflicts and increase the potential for delays. Therefore, the installation of traffic signals (Alat Pemberi Isyarat Lalu Lintas, APILL) is recommended to improve traffic flow regulation and enhance intersection safety. This research contributes to transportation planning by providing empirical evidence for improving the performance of unsignalized intersections in developing regional areas.
