Abstract

This study explores how santri (Islamic students) translate Islamic ethical values into a functioning circular economy within the environment of Pondok Pesantren Riyadlul Jannah in Mojokerto, Indonesia. Using a qualitative case study approach through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, this research investigates waste-to-value initiatives led by santri, such as maggot cultivation and organic fertilizer production. The findings reveal that these initiatives reduce livestock feed costs by approximately 30–40% per month, create additional income streams, and foster community collaboration with local markets. The study develops a conceptual framework linking Islamic values (maqasid al-syari’ah, anti-israf, and environmental stewardship) → santri initiatives (awareness, creativity, collaboration) → circular economy practices (reduce, reuse, recycle, regenerate) → multi-dimensional impacts (economic efficiency, social solidarity, and spiritual growth). This finding contributes to the development of the Islamic Circular Economy concept as a faith-based sustainability model in Islamic boarding school environments.
