Sustainability and Business Strategy: Integrating Environmental, Social, and Economic Goals for Long-Term Competitive Advantage

Abstract

The development of sustainability practices has become one of the critical concerns for enterprises and their stakeholders. Sustainability has become a necessity in the twenty-first century, and businesses must address it as a crucial element for long-term success. This study aims to provide insights into the best practices of integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance aspects into business strategies for sustainable growth. The research incorporates such conceptual frameworks as the Triple Bottom Line, Stakeholder View, Resource-based View, Institutional View, Shared Value Concept, and Sustainability-theoretical Perspectives. It explores the main approaches for incorporating ESG into business strategies and models of embedding sustainability in operations. The study also deals with the key areas of implementing sustainable development practices in various sectors and provides an overview of ESG reporting and accounting, including SDGs, the Global Reporting Initiative, Sustainable Development Accounting, TCFD, Sustainable Business Model Prototypes, Circularity, Sustainable Scorecards, and others. In addition, the research sheds light on such ESG-related concepts and tools as the sustainability-linked balance scorecard, ESG-linked bonds, and green/sustainable finance and discusses numerous benefits associated with ESG practices. The article illustrates ESG practices in leading companies in different industries, as well as the cases of Unilever and Tesla’s ESG performance. Particular attention is paid to the ESG-related challenges that may hinder the spread of sustainable business practices in various sectors. The research highlights ESG-linked trends in business, including artificial intelligence utilisation, net-zero strategies, ESG investment practices, and sustainable business model innovation. A list of strategic recommendations is provided for policymakers, business leaders, and researchers in various fields.
