2026 · NG-Journal of Social Development · 0 citations

Abstract

The study investigates the effect of population increase on infrastructural development and management in Enugu, Nigeria, a rapidly urbanizing city facing significant challenges due to population growth. The research adopted a descriptive methodology, utilizing structured questionnaire and chi-square analysis to evaluate responses from 320 participants across Enugu’s urban centers. Findings revealed that population growth intensifies demand for housing and transportation infrastructure, acknowledging housing expansion as critical emphasizing transportation upgrades. However, utilities and healthcare/education infrastructure were perceived as less impacted. Key challenges include financial constraints, governance inefficiencies, and outdated systems. Hypothesis testing confirmed a significant link between population growth and infrastructural strain (χ²=59.68). The study concludes that proactive planning, sustainable practices, and improved governance are essential to address Enugu’s infrastructural gaps. Recommendations include enhanced funding, integrated urban planning, and policy reforms to foster resilient infrastructure systems.
