Microplastic–heavy metal (MP-HM) complexes markedly modify HM migration, transformation and bioavailability in the environment, threatening ecosystem stability and public health. Many studies have examined the interfacial adsorption and toxicity of single-factor MP-HM contamination, yet existing reviews mostly rely on phenomenological descriptions, lacking systematic synthesis and critical discussion of core mechanisms, model constraints and field-scale evolutionary discrepancies. The long-term stability, interfacial reconstruction, and interconversion between free and MP-bound HMs under in situ dynamic conditions remain poorly understood. To fill this gap, this review clarifies divergent adsorption mechanisms governed by MP polymer properties and HM speciation, and identifies the fundamental limitations of conventional static models for dynamic environmental systems. We further analyze decoupling mechanisms underlying synergistic/antagonistic multi-factor interactions in complex matrices and explain inconsistencies across experimental observations. Accordingly, priority research directions are proposed, including in situ dynamic monitoring, coupled model refinement, and speciation-dependent risk assessment. This review provides new insights into the interfacial evolution of MP-HM co-contamination and supports targeted environmental risk mitigation strategies.
Microplastics (MPs) are widely recognized as particulate hazards, yet environmental aging releases a time-evolving pool of MP-derived dissolved organic matter (MP-DOM) that engages in photochemical and redox reactions. This work provides a critical overview of the aging mechanisms of MPs and the release characteristics...

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in global ecosystems, yet their influence on the biogeochemical cycling of mercury (Hg), a highly toxic metal capable of global-scale and cross-medium transport, remains poorly understood. This Review synthesizes the multifaceted role of MPs in Hg transport and transformation across...
Microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals are widespread co-occurring contaminants in aquatic environments. Their interactions can alter metal mobility and bioavailability and may influence contaminant transfer and toxicity across aquatic food webs. This review critically synthesizes current evidence on MP–metal interaction...

The widespread application of agricultural films has resulted in the accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in soils, creating a coexistence with pesticides like atrazine. This study investigates the environmentally relevant interactions between field-aged polyethylene agricultural films (FAPE), virgin polyethylene (VPE),...
