Abstract

Speaking ability is an essential aspect of English learning, but it is still a challenge for students in grade VIII of SMP Negeri 1 Selaru. Observations show that low self-confidence, limited vocabulary, and lack of interactive methods cause students to be passive in oral communication. This research aims to describe the implementation of the Small Group Discussion method to improve the speaking ability of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Selaru. The study uses a qualitative approach with a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, following the Kemmis and McTaggart model. The research was conducted in one cycle consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation. The speaking ability was assessed based on five components: comprehensibility, fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and language control. The results showed that the implementation of the Small Group Discussion method effectively improved students’ speaking abilities. Students became more active, confident, and motivated to speak English in class. This method allowed them to work collaboratively, share ideas, and practice speaking in a supportive environment. In addition, students perceived the method positively, noting that group discussions made learning more engaging and less intimidating. The findings suggest that Small Group Discussion is a suitable and effective method for enhancing students’ speaking ability in English language learning.
