Abstract

This article presents a general outcome of a doctoral research study in Education conducted at UMECIT, Panama. The study adopted a qualitative research approach to access situated information on intercultural experiences through the Social Sciences subject area, which has traditionally provided a broad understanding of Colombian and global multiculturalism. Specifically, the research sought to understand local realities in two public educational institutions in Bogotá regarding experiences of coexistence and conflict rooted in racism and social intolerance. The study examined social differences associated with regional origin and the processes of encounter and disconnection experienced in urban settings. These dynamics were analysed to identify conscious and unconscious forms of interculturality and culturality inherent in the processes of mestizaje (racial and cultural mixing). The experience and interpretation of this phenomenon within the school environment led to the proposal of relevant curricular dialogues aimed at fostering new educational processes in which school violence, discrimination, and racist behaviours become opportunities for the construction of what are termed new culturalities, understood as emerging learning scenarios.
