Abstract

Background: Research literacy is essential for healthcare professionals. It supports critical thinking and evidencebasedpractice. However, many undergraduate health sciences students have limited exposure to researchmethods and basic research concepts. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a structured health researchtraining program in improving knowledge of basic health research concepts among undergraduate medical anddental students.Materials and Methods: A structured questionnaire with 20 items was used to assess knowledge before and afterthe educational intervention. The analysis included 21 students who completed the intervention and met thestudy criteria. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Pre- and post-intervention scores were compared toevaluate changes in knowledge. Results: The educational intervention led to a significant improvement in knowledge across all domains.Overall knowledge scores increased significantly from 46.10% and 90.40% (p < 0.001). This shows a markedenhancement in understanding of basic health research concepts. Participants also showed a positive attitudetowards research, with 71.4% agreeing on the important role of research in medical education and future clinicalpractice. Conclusion: The structured health research training program was effective in improving knowledge of basic healthresearch concepts among undergraduate health sciences students. It also fostered a positive attitude towardsresearch. Such programs can build research literacy, strengthen confidence, and encourage early involvement inresearch. This may help develop future healthcare professionals who can contribute to evidence-based healthcare.
