Abstract

School leadership has emerged as a critical area of educational research because of its influence on school improvement, teacher development, organisational effectiveness and student learning. Despite the growing body of scholarship, limited attention has been given to understanding the intellectual evolution of school leadership research and India's contribution to the global knowledge base. This study presents a bibliometric analysis of 382 Scopus-indexed publications published between 2005 and March 2026 using Biblioshiny and VOSviewer. Beyond mapping publication trends, citation patterns, collaboration networks and thematic structures, the study interprets the evolution of school leadership through major leadership paradigms, including instructional, transformational, distributed and social justice leadership. The findings indicate that school leadership research has evolved from traditional administrative perspectives towards collaborative, equity-oriented and innovation-driven approaches, with scholarly production remaining concentrated in institutions from the Global North. Although India's contribution has increased in recent years, its international visibility and collaborative engagement remain comparatively limited despite significant educational policy reforms. The study identifies important thematic and geographical gaps and highlights opportunities for strengthening context-sensitive and internationally collaborative research. By integrating bibliometric evidence with theoretical interpretation, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the development of school leadership scholarship and its future research directions.
