Abstract

IEC 61850 is an international communication standard used for Substation Automation Systems as well as Power Utility Communication Networks. The standard defines a common framework for data modeling, communication services and configuration of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs). As the global trend towards digital substations and smart grid technologies increases, reliability of communication performance is a key requirement. In this paper, architectures of IEC 61850, communication services, and logical node-based data modeling as well as applications in digital substations are presented. The performance assessment based on simulation on an Ethernet communication network We analyze the latency, throughput and packet loss for different Load on the Network. The results obtained are then analysed in terms of IEC 61850 communication requirements to determine their applicability for digital substations. The outcomes show that Ethernet based IEC 61850 communication incorporates dependable execution for observing, mechanization and control applications in cutting edge power frameworks.
