Optimizing Warehouse Design and Inventory Management at Affordable Interior Systems

· IISE Annual Conference & Expo 2025 · 0 citations

Abstract

The objective of our project was to reduce operating costs through efficient inventory management and space utilization at Affordable Interior Systems (AIS). Our project focused on optimizing bulk inventory through warehouse design and material transportation. We achieved these objectives by updating the facility layout and collecting data on the factory floor regarding bulk inventory storage and volumetric calculations on space. We also utilized software through computer simulation (Flexsim), design (VIPPlanOpt), and other tools such as AutoCAD. The results showed concrete actions that AIS can take to maximize their current space and achieve cost savings. In conclusion, this project allowed us to find small changes that AIS, an already stable company, can use to be more cost-effective while also providing a flexible strategy that can be adjusted as the company’s needs evolve. The combination of data-driven tools and hands-on research gives AIS actionable insights to refine its operations and achieve long-term efficiency improvements continually.
