Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory snow maker system

Abstract

This report outlines the integration, operational parameters, and technical specifications of the newly installed HKD Volt snow making system at the US Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL). Conducting systematic military research on snow physics—critical for understanding mobility, concealment, and equipment performance in arctic environments—is often hindered by the unpredictability of natural snowfall. To address this capability gap, CRREL has implemented a controlled snow making system to produce snow on demand. The primary objective of this document is to establish comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs) for CRREL to ensure safe and efficient system operation. The approach to creating the SOPs consisted of two phases: (1) initial installation and system shakedown and (2) final development of the SOPs. The successful deployment of this capability marks a significant advancement for CRREL, enabling repeatable, longer-duration scientific experimentation independent of weather constraints and facilitating potential future efforts to fully integrate the snow maker system within the Frost Effects Research Facility (FERF) to achieve precise control over ambient temperature and humidity. Ultimately this enhanced research capability directly supports the Army’s strategic mission by improving operational readiness, equipment design, and warfighter safety in cold regions.
