Abstract

Energy demand in Morocco has been growing steadily for years, and the textile industry sits at the heart of this challenge: it is one of the largest industrial electricity consumers in the country, yet still almost entirely dependent on a grid fed by imported fossil fuels. This paper presents a case study based on real consumption data from a Moroccan textile facility located in Casablanca, where we investigated how a grid-connected hybrid system combining rooftop solar PV, a wind turbine, and lithium-ion battery storage could cover the factory's full electricity demand. The system was modeled using two complementary tools: PVsyst for the detailed photovoltaic simulation and HOMER Pro for the overall hybrid optimization, where five energy scenarios were built and compared. The best-performing configuration is a 4,698 kWp PV array, one 800 kW Enercon E-53 wind turbine, and a battery storage system of 3,000 MWh total capacity, which achieves a renewable energy fraction of 94%, reduces grid purchases to just 706 MWh per year, and cuts CO 2 emissions from 7,517 down to 446 tons annually, a reduction of approximately 94%. These results confirm that hybrid renewable energy systems are technically viable for energy-intensive industries in Morocco and offer a clear and replicable path towards industrial decarbonization, in line with the country's national energy goals for 2030.
