Abstract

Pragmatism is one of the philosophical foundations of education that emphasizes experience, problem-solving, and the usefulness of knowledge in real life. In the context of Indonesian education, this approach is relevant because it supports contextual learning and is oriented toward the development of students' competencies. This study aims to analyze the relevance of the philosophical foundation of pragmatism to national education in Indonesia through a review of the alignment of values, goals, and learning practices. This study also offers novelty in the form of integrating the principles of pragmatism with the philosophical foundations of national education rooted in the values of Pancasila as well as the character of the Indonesian nation. This research uses a literature study method with a philosophical-critical approach through the analysis of various literature, scientific journals, and national education policy documents. Data were analyzed descriptively-analytically to examine the conceptual relationship between pragmatism and the Indonesian national education system. The study results indicate that pragmatism contributes to strengthening active, adaptive, and experience-based learning, which aligns with the demands of 21st-century education. Furthermore, this approach can still be integrated with moral and character values that form the foundation of national education, so it is not contradictory. Thus, pragmatism can be positioned as a philosophical approach that supports the development of Indonesian education in a more contextual, flexible, and responsive manner to the advancement of science and technology, without neglecting the fundamental values of nationalism.
