2026 · International Journal of Applied Science and Research · 0 citations

Abstract

This study explores the history, growth, and influence of Christianity in Central and East Africa, focusing on the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, the Central African Republic, Chad, Cameroon, Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda. It examines how Christianity spread across these regions through the efforts of both Catholic and Protestant missionaries and how the faith interacted with African societies, cultures, and political systems. Using a historical and analytical approach based on documentary sources, the study investigates the various missionary methods that contributed to the growth of Christianity, including education, healthcare, catechetical instruction, the training of indigenous clergy and catechists, language translation, and community development. It also considers the challenges missionaries encountered, such as resistance from traditional religious practices, the influence of Islam in some regions, colonial politics, ethnic conflicts, and periods of political instability. The study finds that, despite these challenges, Christianity became deeply rooted throughout Central and East Africa. Beyond its religious mission, it played a significant role in promoting education, healthcare, leadership formation, peacebuilding, and social transformation. Missionary activities also encouraged the emergence of local clergy and the adaptation of Christian worship to African cultures, helping Christianity become a truly indigenous faith. The study concludes that the missionary enterprise profoundly shaped both the religious and social development of Central and East Africa. The legacy of these early missions remains visible today in the vibrant Christian communities, educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and strong local churches that continue to contribute to the region’s spiritual and social development.
