ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) ADOPTION AND ACADEMIC LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICE DELIVERY IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS: A QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS
Abstract
The increasing adoption of AI technologies presents significant opportunities for improving library operations, enhancing user services, and supporting information access. However, the extent to which AI influences library service delivery and the challenges associated with its implementation remain areas requiring empirical investigation. This study evaluated the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on academic library and information service delivery in higher education institutions. A quantitative research design employing a cross-sectional survey was adopted for the study. Data were collected from 157 valid respondents using a structured questionnaire and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings indicate that AI adoption in higher education libraries is at a moderate level, with librarians generally acknowledging its potential to improve service delivery. Nevertheless, implementation remains constrained by challenges such as inadequate technological infrastructure, limited funding, insufficient professional training, and institutional readiness. The study concludes that successful AI integration in academic libraries requires strategic investment in digital infrastructure, continuous capacity building for librarians, and supportive institutional policies. The findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge on AI-enabled library services and provide practical insights for library administrators, policymakers, and researchers seeking to strengthen digital transformation initiatives in higher education libraries.
