Menjaga Lisan Perspektif Islam (Telaah Hadis-hadis Terhadap Bahaya Gibah)
Abstract
This study aims to identify and analyze the hadith of Prophet Muhammad Sa. regarding the importance of guarding the tongue from the dangers of backbiting (ghibah) and other verbal vices. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research relies on literature-based hadith text analysis. The results demonstrate that prophetic traditions offer explicit guidance concerning the perils of loose speech and the immense virtues of refraining from harmful words. Although the tongue is a physically small divine blessing, its misuse frequently leads to grave sins. In contemporary culture, people often trivialize gossip as entertainment, despite its severe spiritual consequences and its classification in prophetic literature as a form of verbal adultery (zina al-lisan). The analyzed ahadith instruct believers to remain silent unless speaking brings genuine goodness, as uttering what others dislike falls directly into ghibah. When in doubt, silence serves as a safeguard against self-destruction. This paper contributes to the discourse on ethical self-control by underscoring the elevated status promised to those who restrain their speech, namely elevated spiritual ranks and Allah's guarantee of Paradise.
