Teaching Cultural Memory through Poetry: Süleyman Rustam’s Representation of the Southern Azerbaijani National Movement

Abstract

Poetry plays an important role in transmitting cultural memory across generations; however, the pedagogical significance of literary representations of the Southern Azerbaijani national movement remains insufficiently examined. This study investigates how Süleyman Rustam transforms the historical and political developments surrounding Tabriz and the 1945–1946 National Government into a poetic discourse of separation, linguistic rights, resistance, and collective belonging. It also considers the potential of this poetic corpus for teaching Azerbaijani literature, cultural history, and civic values. Using a qualitative historical-comparative approach and close textual analysis, the study examines selected poems alongside memoir materials and Azerbaijani literary criticism. The analysis identifies five interconnected motifs: Tabriz as a personified homeland, the Araz River as both a border and a symbol of historical separation, the mother tongue as an instrument of cultural survival, resistance as a civic and ethical responsibility, and international solidarity as a connection between national liberation, anti-fascism, and anti-colonialism. The findings demonstrate that Rustam combines documentary observation, lyrical address, and recurring spatial symbols to transform historical experience into emotionally accessible cultural memory. Rather than presenting Southern Azerbaijan as an occasional political subject, his poetry constructs it as a sustained ethical and aesthetic dimension of civic lyricism. From a pedagogical perspective, these poems may support the teaching of contested history, language rights, national literature, and civic identity while helping students distinguish literary representation from historical documentation. As the study is interpretive and does not evaluate classroom implementation, its teaching implications should be examined through future curriculum-based and learner-centered research.
