The Role of Language in Shaping Cultural Identity: A Critical Study of Contemporary Literary Narratives

Sep 2026 · Kashf Journal of Multidisciplinary Research · 0 citations

Abstract

Language serves as a fundamental medium through which individuals and communities construct, preserve, and express their cultural identities. In contemporary literary narratives, language extends beyond its communicative function and becomes a powerful tool for representing social values, historical experiences, collective memories, and cultural transformations. This study critically explores the role of language in shaping cultural identity through an analysis of contemporary literary texts and their representation of linguistic diversity, cultural belonging, and social change. The research examines how writers employ linguistic choices, regional expressions, indigenous vocabulary, and narrative styles to reflect the experiences of different communities in a rapidly globalizing world. Contemporary literature demonstrates that language functions as a bridge between personal identity and collective heritage while also highlighting tensions between globalization, modernization, and cultural preservation. The study argues that literary narratives provide important spaces where marginalized voices, cultural traditions, and linguistic identities can be represented and sustained. By analyzing the relationship between language and literature, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of how linguistic practices influence cultural consciousness and identity formation in contemporary societies.
