Data Management Planning for Open and Reproducible Research
Abstract
The term Data Management Plan (DMP) can elicit reluctance, scepticism and sometimes even an eye roll from overworked and overstretched researchers, who can view it as an unwelcome administrative burden. In reality, a well-considered DMP is an incredibly valuable project document that underpins open and reproducible research, supporting future reuse by both the research team and others. As the volume and complexity of research data continue to increase, researchers benefit from clear, practical approaches to data storage, security and sharing. This article outlines the core elements of an effective DMP, pitfalls to avoid and how DMPs enable Open Research through responsible data sharing and long-term preservation. It also highlights tools and support available to help researchers create DMPs that are useful throughout the project and beyond.
