Abstract

The ability to store energy is a key factor in improving the on-site use of locally generated electricity, especially in areas where energy production varies considerably throughout the year. In Slovakia, efforts to decrease reliance on fossil fuel imports are accompanied by policy measures that promote the establishment of energy communities. These communities enable electricity generation, exchange, storage and consumption within a defined local area. This study evaluates the current energy demand of a selected urban district and examines the possible integration of local energy sources together with an energy storage system. The district serves as a case study for determining how storage can enhance energy sharing and improve the balance between electricity generation and consumption. Various storage capacities are modelled to assess their influence on reducing grid electricity imports, decreasing excess electricity supplied back to the grid, and increasing the use of locally produced energy. The analysis also considers periods of limited solar availability, which are particularly important in Slovakia during autumn and winter because of reduced solar irradiation and shorter daylight duration. The results obtained are assessed using electricity imports, electricity exports and the share of energy consumed within the community as the main comparison indicators. Overall, the study demonstrates the potential contribution of energy storage to the operation of urban energy communities.
