Abstract

What does theology look like when scholars from the Global South reflect among themselves? Faith in Public is the fourteenth volume in the Beyers Naudé Series on Public Theology and the fruit of nearly two decades of sustained collaboration between Brazilian and South African scholars. These two post-colonial democracies share the historical realities of colonialism, entrenched inequality, racial fracture, gender-based violence, and contested questions about the place of faith in plural public life. They also share remarkable theological vitality and hope! The eleven chapters by established and emerging scholars engage citizenship, decolonisation, gender justice, protest violence, interreligious dialogue, and democratic theory. Drawing on political and liberation theologies, public theologies, Reformation thought, critical social theory, gender and contextual hermeneutics, among other approachers, contributors illuminate both the distinct textures of their own contexts and the generative resonances that emerge across the Atlantic South. Essential reading for scholars and students in public theology, political theology, social ethics, and African and Latin American religious studies.
