Abstract

Let $G$ be a finite group and $x \in G$. In 2013, Hai-Reuven proved that the cardinality of the centralizer of $x$ divides the cardinality of the solubilizer of $x$. Settling a conjecture of Mousavi, Poozesh and Zamani, we show that the cardinality of the normalizer of $\langle x \rangle$ is also a divisor. We actually give direct short proofs of more general results.

A remark on polycyclic groups of birational automorphisms

Let $X$ be an algebraic variety of dimension $d$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of zero characteristic. Suppose that $G$ is a virtually polycyclic subgroup in the group $\mathrm{Bir}(X)$ of birational automorphisms of $X$. We show that the virtual derived length of $G$ does not exceed $2d+1$. Moreover, if $X$ i...

On $\boldsymbol{p}$-rationality in double covers of symmetric and alternating groups

We construct, for every odd prime $p$, a bijection between the $p'$-spin characters $\widetilde S_n$ and those of a Sylow normalizer which, in particular, is equivariant under the Galois action detecting $p$-rationality. An analogous result holds for $\widetilde A_n$. We also obtain a blockwise refinement for height-ze...

The tautological ring of $M_{25}$ is not Gorenstein

We show that the tautological ring of $M_{25}$ is not Gorenstein, disproving a conjecture of Faber from 1993. This also implies that the Faber-Zagier relations are the complete list of tautological relations on $M_{25}$.

Irreducibility of truncations of the Catalan generating function

We prove that, for every positive integer $n$, the polynomial $C_0+C_1x+\cdots+C_nx^n$ is irreducible over $\mathbb{Q}$, where $C_k$ denotes the $k$th Catalan number.

On Intersections of System Normalizers

We give a negative answer to Problem 17.39 of the Kourovka Notebook. For every odd prime power $q$ and every $m\geq1$, we construct a finite metabelian group $G_{m,q}$ with $Z_\infty(G_{m,q})=1$ and $|\Phi(G_{m,q})|=q$ for which the least number of system normalizers with trivial intersection is $m+1$. Thus the number...

Abelian composition factors of finite rational groups

Motivated by an observation concerning the $S_3$-conjecture, we prove that every abelian composition factor of a finite rational group has order $2$, $3$, or $5$. Thompson previously restricted these orders to $\{2,3,5,7,11\}$; we exclude $7$ and $11$, establishing the bound that he proposed. Together with the work of...
