Abstract

The article is devoted to the role of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the national system of values of Armenians and their ethnic identity. The relevance of the study of the significance of the religious factor in the national identity of Armenians is determined by the aggravation of relations between the government of Armenia and the Armenian Apostolic Church, which led to a social conflict - the confrontation between representatives of the clergy and society. The purpose of the study is to study the peculiarities of the religious self-identification of Armenians, the role of the Armenian Church as a center for storing national traditions and the formation of collective memory. Methods used: comparative historical and analysis of data obtained during a semi-structured interview with Armenians (representatives of the clergy, youth living in Armenia). The study revealed that for respondents from Armenia, the primary role is the role of the Church as a spiritual and moral institution and, above all, as "a community or community of people believing in Jesus Christ who are trying to live by his teachings and commandments." The respondents also noted the importance of the Church's activities in the process of preserving Armenian identity and national culture.
