Impact of Neck Pain on Quality Of Life in Breastfeeding Mothers: A Cross-Sectional Study
Abstract
Background: Breastfeeding, while beneficial for both mother and child, often leads to musculoskeletal discomfort particularly neck pain which can negatively affect a mother’s quality of life. This study aims to assess the impact of neck pain on quality of life among breastfeeding mothers using a cross-sectional, questionnaire-based approach. Neck pain severity was assessed using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and Quality of Life by using WHOQOL-BREF Questionnaire. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 96 primiparous breastfeeding mothers aged 20–40 years in Bangalore, India. Neck pain severity was assessed using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and QoL was measured using the WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and Pearson’s correlation were used for analysis. Conclusion: Neck pain is highly prevalent among primiparous breastfeeding mothers, yet it did not significantly impact overall QoL scores in this sample. Routine ergonomic education and posture correction strategies may help prevent chronic discomfort and support continued breastfeeding.
