Beyond Participation: The Capacities That Shape Engagement in Collaborative Innovation

Sep 2026 · 0 citations

Abstract

Meaningful participation in education research and development requires more than inviting students, families, educators, and community members to contribute. This study examines the capacities and conditions that supported full participation in Collaborative Innovation, the Center for Learner Innovation Pathway’s (CLPI) structured approach to co-research and co-design. Drawing on structured reflections from CLPI researchers and program designers, the study identifies the skills, knowledge, and dispositions demonstrated by partners and the CLPI team and examines how program design and project conditions shaped engagement. Findings show that meaningful participation depended on complementary forms of expertise, opportunities for partners to take on substantive roles, staff facilitation that scaffolded rather than displaced partner leadership, and conditions such as protected time, clear expectations, trusted relationships, and flexible structures. The study also finds that capacity building emerged less as a discrete activity than as an outcome of participating in inquiry, reflection, decision-making, and co-design. The report offers practical lessons for researchers, designers, facilitators, and organizations seeking to move beyond representation toward shared ownership and co-leadership.
