Abstract

The staging of Minangkabau wedding receptions (baralek) has shifted from home settings to rented halls, increasingly involves wedding organizers, faces more diverse audiences, and must accommodate variations of adat salingka nagari, all of which require the Master of Ceremony (MC) to deliver customary messages without stripping them of meaning. This study aims to understand the communication experience of MCs at Minangkabau wedding receptions in Padang City, covering their experience of the profession, the forms of communication they perform, and the subjective meanings they construct about themselves and their role. A qualitative method grounded in Alfred Schutz's social phenomenology served as the main framework, supported by Gerry Philipsen's Speech Codes Theory within a constructivist paradigm. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews with six informants who had practiced as MCs for at least fifteen years and remained active in Padang City, complemented by documentation and limited observation, then analyzed through nine stages of phenomenological analysis. Findings show that the customary knowledge of MCs is socially formed through each individual's lifeworld rather than formal education, and that MCs face five domains of challenge: cultural, structural-adat, technical-coordinative, psychological-relational, and internal-professional.
