Abstract

In the context of increasing demands for efficient energy use and the development of renewable energy sources, thermal energy storage in high-temperature reservoirs can play a key role. These storage systems enable the accumulation of excess electrical energy in form of heat during periods of low demand and their subsequent use during times of increased need, thereby contributing to the stabilization of energy systems and enhancing the efficiency of industrial processes. In this study, the fundamental thermal properties of a selected material were measured – specifically thermal diffusivity and specific heat capacity using the laser flash method, and thermal expansion using dilatometric analysis. Based on the obtained data, the geometrical bulk density and thermal conductivity as a function of temperature were calculated. These methods allow for accurate determination of thermophysical parameters at high temperatures, which are essential for evaluating the storage potential of materials. The acquired results were further used as input boundary conditions for numerical simulations of thermal energy storage and cycling processes, enabling the optimization of storage system design and prediction of their long-term performance. This work thus contributes to the development of advanced thermal energy storage systems, which are essential for the energy transition toward sustainable sources.
