Abstract

Power dissipation has become a major design challenge in modern Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) systems due to the increasing demand for portable and high-performance electronic devices. Counters are the essential sequential circuits extensively employed in digital systems and consume considerable amounts of power due to the continuous switching activity. This work presents the design and comparative analysis of low-power techniques for a 4-bit synchronous binary counter using 180 nm CMOS technology in the Cadence Virtuoso environment. The counter is implemented using D flip-flops and combinational logic, and two low-power approaches, namely Integrated Clock Gating (ICG) and MTCMOS-based Power Gating, are investigated. All these design approaches have been simulated in similar conditions and evaluated on the basis of average power consumption. The simulation results reveal that the ICG approach helps in reducing the dynamic power consumption through clock switching reduction. Similarly, the MTCMOS based power gating technique ensures a further decrease in power dissipation by employing sleep transistors, which reduce the leakage power consumption. It is evident from the results that the proposed MTCMOS power gated counter dissipates less average power compared to other counter designs.
