Religion and alienation: towards posing of the probleme

Aug 2026 · St. Tikhons' University Review · 0 citations

Abstract

In the philosophy of religion, the theme of alienation is used rather narrowly, mainly in connection with its sociocentric interpretations, as well as in the context of German classical idealism and materialism. In fact, it turns out that the phenomena behind alienation theories are fundamental and quite universal in the history of human thought. One shall not be wondered by the case that philosophy tends to deal with just such things. The article examines concepts of alienation in the religion studies, and issues related to them in the works of Plotinus, Kant, Hegel, Schelling, Feuerbach, Marx, Kierkegaard, Nesmelov, Nietzsche, and Girard. It is demonstrated that the diversity of approaches to the problem is due to the difference in axiomatic assumptions or to what is taken as basic experience. As a review of concepts, the article aims to show the possibilities of a "cartographic" approach in teaching philosophy of religion.
