University-industry collaboration in the development of curriculum in higher education in Ghana : a case study

Abstract

University-industry collaboration has emerged as a significant concept in the development of curriculum in higher institutions of learning. This study explores the dynamics of university-industry collaboration in the development of curricula in higher education institutions in Ghana. Specifically, it focuses on how such partnerships enhance curriculum relevance, employability, and innovation. The study aims to identify the benefits and challenges of university-industry collaboration in curriculum development and provide strategies to bridge the gap between universities and industry. To achieve these objectives, this study employed a case study design alongside innovation configuration. The research investigates the mechanisms, benefits, and challenges of integrating industry perspectives into academic program design. Data were collected through interviews, document analysis, and focus group discussions involving university administrators, faculty members, industry administrators, and private business owners. While developing a curriculum for higher educational institutions, collaboration between the university and industry is paramount. This study identifies the necessities for industry participation, employment, a stakeholder consultation forum program, university research, industry-funded research, a repackaging approach, needs assessment, curricular alignment and integration, experiential learning, societal demands, instructional materials, and teaching strategies. Findings reveal that effective collaboration between universities and industry partners leads to curricula that align more closely with labor market needs, promote practical skills acquisition, and support national development goals. In view of the findings, the study proposes an innovation configuration mapping to improve university-industry collaboration in curriculum development in higher education. However, challenges such as competitive information leakage, lack of commitment, inadequate policy frameworks, and mismatched expectations often hinder sustained engagement. The study concludes that strengthening UIC through structured frameworks, mutual trust, and continuous stakeholder dialogue is essential to producing graduates equipped to navigate Ghana’s evolving socio-economic landscape. Recommendations are made for policy reforms, institutional support mechanisms, and capacity-building initiatives to foster more sustainable university-industry partnerships in curriculum development.
