Feasibility Study of Lightning Arresters Default Detector on the 20 kV Distribution Network of the Lengkese Feeder, PT PLN (Persero) ULP Takalar
Abstract
Lightning arrester is one of the protection equipment in the medium voltage distribution network that functions to protect transformers and electrical equipment from overvoltage due to lightning strikes or surges. As the operating life increases, the lightning arrester can experience insulation degradation which is characterized by increased partial discharge activity so that periodic condition evaluations are required to ensure the reliability of the distribution system. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of lightning arresters in the Lengkese 20 kV PT PLN (Persero) ULP Takalar Feeder using Arrester Default Detector (ADD). The research method was carried out through online partial discharge measurement without disconnecting the system, then the measurement results were classified based on the level of partial discharge activity to determine the feasibility condition of the lightning arrester. A total of 54 lightning arrester units installed at 18 distribution substations became the object of research. The test results showed that 30 units (55.56%) were in decent condition, 17 units (31.48%) were in the alert category, and 7 units (12.96%) were in unsuitable condition. These results show that most lightning arresters can still operate properly, but some units require periodic monitoring or replacement to prevent protection failures. The use of Arrester Default Detector (ADD) has proven to be effective as a condition monitoring method that is able to support the implementation of condition-based maintenance so that the reliability of the 20 kV distribution network can be improved.
