The complicated ankle sprain
Abstract
Inadequate healing and rehabilitation after an ankle sprain may lead to chronic ankle instability, predisposing patients to impingement symptoms. The initial injury may also cause osteochondral lesions of the talus or peroneal tendon injuries, which are frequently underdiagnosed because symptoms overlap early with those of a simple ankle sprain. This review finds that rehabilitation remains the cornerstone of treatment for instability and impingement, while peroneal injuries are typically managed surgically. Management of osteochondral lesions depends on the type and severity.
