Abstract

Nigeria possesses one of the largest confirmed natural gas deposits in Africa; nonetheless, it continues to encounter issues in gas utilisation, such as stranded gas, frequent flaring, infrastructural deficiencies, and operational inefficiencies. In a global energy context increasingly oriented towards net-zero carbon emissions, efficient gas utilisation is essential for Nigeria to satisfy domestic energy requirements, enhance environmental performance, and align with Sustainable Development Goals 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 13 (Climate Action). Even with the push from the Decade of Gas, we have not completely turned our natural gas resources into profit. The study analyses integrated gas usage and operational methods within Nigeria's oil and gas sector, focusing on minimizing flaring and monetizing stranded and related gas via the implementation of modular Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) Technology. The research integrates literature review, field data analysis, process simulation, and economic assessment. Critical operational and economic metrics, including flaring and venting volumes, flare gas charges, gas recovery potential, capital intensity, and project economics, were evaluated utilizing industry-standard instruments such as Aspen HYSYS for process modelling. Findings demonstrate that implementing integrated gas utilization methods based on modular GTL systems can decrease routine flaring by as much as 60% in specific asset categories, especially in marginal and distant locations. Supplementary advantages encompass enhanced regulatory compliance, less greenhouse gas emissions, and diversification of revenue sources via liquid fuels production.
