Evaluation of In-Vivo Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Various Extracts of Mussaenda Philippica on Carrageenan Induced Paw Edema in Albino Wistar Rats
Abstract
Aim: The present study was undertaken to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of various extracts of Mussaenda philippica using the carrageenan – induced paw edema model in albino wistar rats. Methodology: The shade dried leaves plant powder was extracted it various solvents like Benzene, Diethyl ether and Chloroform by continuous hot percolation method using Soxhlet apparatus. Various extracts were administered orally at 200 mg/kg for low dose and 400 mg/kg for high dose. Then used in the standard drug as Indomethacin was 10 mg/kg. Results: The various extracts of Mussaenda philippica produced a reduction in carrageenan – induced paw edema compared with the disease control group. The anti-inflammatory response increased with higher dose (400 mg//kg) in several treatment groups. At the fourth hour observation, the percentage inhibition of pa edema as standard drug 40.36% for indomethacin, then various extracts of Benzene was 24.31% lower dose and 38.07% of higher dose. Then Diethyl ether was 26.60% lower dose and 37.30% of higher dose. Then Chloroform was 28.13% lower dose and 39.60% of higher dose. Among the extract treated groups, the high dose extracts demonstrated greater inhibition than their corresponding low dose extracts. Conclusion: The activity was more pronounced at the higher dose of the various extracts. Among the tested various extract, the higher dose of Chloroform produced 39.60% inhibition at the fourth hour, followed by higher dose of Benzene and higher dose of Diethyl ether. The present experimental findings indicate that various extracts of Mussaenda philippica possess anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenan - induced paw edema in albino Wistar rats.
