Physical Activity and Adolescent Brain Structure, Mental Health, and Academic Outcomes
Abstract
Key Points Question Is daily step count associated with mental health, academic performance, and brain structure in early adolescents? Findings In this cohort study of 5515 adolescent participants (aged 12 years) outfitted with step counters, higher daily step count was associated with better mental health in a dose-response manner. Greater cortical thickness statistically mediated the association of higher daily step count and better mental health 1 year later. Meaning These findings suggest that accumulating daily steps represents an accessible target associated with positive mental health outcomes and brain development in adolescents.
