Analysis on Power Flows in a Hybrid System Modelling for Smart Building
Abstract
Renewable energy is an essential component in Smart Buildings to guarantee a continuous power supply. Hybrid systems of renewable energy have recently gained a lot of interest by integrating wind energy, solar arrays, battery banks, and the load demand of Smart Buildings. In this paper, a hybrid system has been designed to meet the electricity demand of a research area. The system consists of a 564.5 kW wind turbine and a 1135.88 kW solar array. The electrical power demand of the research area in terms of kW peak load demand is 814kW. Power flow analysis of the power generated by the hybrid system is carried out for both grid-connected and islanded modes of operation. The effect of varying irradiation and wind speed at a specific location has also been investigated. In addition, the energy management system has been designed to manage the power flows of generation, storage, and load consumption. The designed system has been modeled and validated using MATLAB software.
