Self-Concept among Young Adults: Implications for Mental Health, Health Behaviours, and Sustainable Development Goal 3

2026 · International journal of research and innovation in social science · 0 citations

Abstract

Background: Young adulthood is a critical developmental period characterized by identity exploration, changing social roles, increasing autonomy, and significant educational, occupational, and interpersonal transitions. Self-concept, particularly self-concept clarity, may play an important role in psychological adjustment during this period. However, evidence concerning its relationship with mental health, health-related behaviours, digital environments, and broader health promotion remains fragmented. This review examines self-concept among young adults and considers its implications for mental health and Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), particularly Target 3.4.
