Abstract

Indonesia is a nation characterized by diversity in religion, ethnicity, culture, language, and social background—factors that represent both an asset and a challenge in fostering a harmonious society. In this context, an attitude of tolerance must be cultivated through education, including Christian Religious Education (CRE). CRE plays a vital role in shaping students' character, enabling them to respect differences without compromising their identity or the steadfastness of their Christian faith. This study aims to analyze the role of CRE in fostering tolerance within a pluralistic society and to identify instructional approaches that support the creation of an inclusive and harmonious life. A literature review method was employed, examining relevant sources concerning Christian Religious Education, character education, tolerance, and pluralistic society. The findings indicate that CRE serves not only to deepen the understanding of the Christian faith but also contributes to character formation through values such as love, respect for others, forgiveness, justice, peace, and humility. An approach to CRE that is inclusive, contextual, dialogical, and responsive to cultural diversity can help students recognize differences, cultivate an open mindset, avoid discrimination and prejudice, and resolve conflicts peacefully. Consequently, CRE should emphasize teacher modeling, the habituation of values, interfaith dialogue, respect for diversity, and the application of Christian values in daily life. This approach fosters a generation that is faithful, tolerant, and open-minded, capable of living harmoniously within a pluralistic society.
