Abstract

A literature review is presented on the selection of a drilling fluid for sidetracking from the old well stock in the argillaceous formations of Western Siberia. The efficiency of this technology is shown to depend on preserving the stability of the borehole walls in highly reactive clays and preventing damage to the productive formation during its drill-in. The geological conditions of Western Siberia, the physicochemical mechanisms of clay swelling, dispersion and inhibition, and the processes of near-wellbore-zone impairment are reviewed. The requirements imposed on the drilling fluid are consolidated into a single coupled set. A comparative analysis of conventional systems shows that none of them effectively resolves the stated problem. A polyglycol drilling-fluid system combining a biopolymer base, potassium chloride, polyglycol reagents, a lubricating additive and carbonate bridging agents is substantiated as a promising solution; a preliminary formulation and directions for further experimental research are defined.
