Communication for Environmental Sustainability: Strategies, Barriers, and Opportunities in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development
Abstract
Environmental sustainability in agriculture and rural development depends not only on technological innovations and scientific knowledge but also on the ability to communicate relevant information effectively among farmers, extension personnel, researchers, policymakers, and local communities. Communication is a dynamic, two-way process through which knowledge, ideas, perceptions, and attitudes are exchanged and transformed into shared understanding and collective action. This review examines major communication strategies used to promote environmental sustainability, with particular emphasis on agricultural extension and rural development. A narrative review methodology was adopted, drawing upon literature published between approximately 2000 and 2025, including peer-reviewed articles, books, institutional reports, and credible online resources. The literature was organized into seven major themes: informative communication, participatory communication, behaviour change communication, advocacy communication, media and digital communication, barriers to effective communication, and strategies for overcoming these barriers. The review indicates that informative approaches are useful for developing awareness, while participatory communication promotes local ownership and social learning. Behaviour change communication addresses the social, psychological, and contextual factors influencing environmentally responsible practices, whereas advocacy communication contributes to policy development and institutional action. Digital technologies have further expanded the speed and geographical reach of agricultural and environmental information. However, organizational weaknesses, language and semantic difficulties, digital exclusion, social inequalities, and psychological resistance continue to restrict communication effectiveness. An integrated communication framework combining interpersonal, participatory, behavioral, advocacy and digital approaches is therefore essential for achieving sustained environmental outcomes in agriculture and rural communities.
