Reduction of torque ripple in dual-electrical-port starter/generator with medium-to-high frequency for aerospace applications
Abstract
A study on the torque ripple suppression of a 15 kW medium-to-high-frequency dual-electrical-port (DEP) starter/generator for aerospace applications is presented in this paper. First, the topology and operating principle of the machine are introduced, and the electromagnetic performance of the baseline model is analyzed using the Finite Element Method(FEM). To reduce the torque ripple, two structural optimization strategies are employed, including a non-uniform air-gap structure defined by a 9 mm air-gap shaping parameter and a symmetrical magnetic pole offset of 1.5°. It is indicated by the FEM simulation results that the optimized structure suppresses spatial harmonics and reduces torque ripple. The value of torque ripple reaches a minimum value of 9.24% under the rated-load condition at rated speed. Meanwhile, the optimized machine exhibits improved electromagnetic performance across the selected operating conditions.
