Carl Friedrich Gauss: Werke and Individual Papers — Faithful Readers, Transcriptions, Translations and AI Commentary

Oct 2026 · Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)
History and Theory of Mathematics

Abstract

This collection makes works of Carl Friedrich Gauss available as original-language faithful transcriptions, faithful English translations, editable source materials, historical source images and separate AI editorial commentary. Its retained materials cover Bands I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and XI Part I, individual papers and selected passages, across number theory, analysis, geometry, geodesy and astronomy. Each component has its own coverage and review status. Start with these four current reading PDFs. They offer Band I and Band II in the original languages and in faithful English. Band I assembles the historical witness's physical leaves 2–483, including the recovered physical 80–87; physical 1 is a modern library metadata and terms sheet. Band II extends through final physical 544 of the witness printed in 1876, although an older authority filename says 1870. These historical bodies have been assembled. Full-volume final reviews and disclosed source-mark, font and comparison holds remain open. Physical witness leaves, printed folios and generated PDF pages are distinct locators. Band I — Original-language faithful transcription (821 PDF pages; 42.4 MB). Band I — Faithful English translation (606 PDF pages; 12.7 MB). Band II — Original-language faithful transcription (1214 PDF pages; 88.8 MB). Band II — Faithful English translation (819 PDF pages; 20.3 MB). The transcription and translation preserve the author's words, structure, original mathematical objects, formulas, conditions, arguments and order. Source errors and unresolved marks remain identifiable; later editorial findings do not silently replace the historical statements. AI editorial commentary — ChatGPT, GPT-6 Astra, UltraAuthor: ChatGPT. Recorded model: GPT-6 Astra. Reasoning effort: Ultra. The following two PDFs contain separate modern explanations, conceptual errata, supplementary arguments and extensions. They are AI editorial work, not Gauss's historical text. Band I commentary covers physical 88–483 only and does not claim complete commentary coverage. Band I — AI editorial commentary — ChatGPT, GPT-6 Astra, Ultra (552 PDF pages; 11.9 MB). Band II — AI editorial commentary — ChatGPT, GPT-6 Astra, Ultra (1027 PDF pages; 15.2 MB). Band III is in progress. Diplomatic original-language transcription and close English translation are being produced from the historical witness and integrated in sections. There is no complete current faithful Band III reader in this edition. An earlier Band III reconstruction is retained in provenance. The presence of materials for other volumes does not establish complete faithful editions of them. The six reading PDFs above are the smaller versions intended for reading. The original-language PDFs include scanned source controls alongside transcription components; 1,214 generated Band II pages are not 1,214 historical leaves. Image encoding and duplicate font storage have been reduced while text, formulas, layout and navigation are retained. Current readers — full-resolution originals preserved losslessly is an optional 938 MB download containing their six full-resolution source PDFs with exact retained original byte identities. The current I/II editable sources and dependencies (ordered byte parts below) (3.46 GB) preserve selected source, translation and separate commentary inputs, macros, source images and assembly instructions. They also include the later Band II presentation corrections and their evidence, rather than only the earlier published source snapshots. Read the current reading guide for component selection, qualifications and the distinction between selected inputs and preserved preimages. Earlier reconstructions—kept for provenance (ordered byte parts below) (6.61 GB) preserves the entire 97-file predecessor edition under its original filenames, including all noncurrent files: older automated reconstructions, superseded readers, earlier editable containers, source snapshots, repair packages, manifests and guides. These older model-generated reconstructions are unverified as complete faithful editions and are not the preferred reading versions. Recorded bounded checks, repairs and source qualifications remain preserved. Unknown backend model and effort identities are left unidentified. Earlier Band IV geodesy work and its editable materials remain identifiable inside this archive; their bounded scope is retained. The earlier reader formerly mislabeled as a Band I alternate remains correctly identified as Band IX. Reading curation, 8 October 2026: six current I/II reading PDFs are foregrounded; separate AI commentary is explicitly attributed; full-resolution originals and editable dependencies are retained; all noncurrent work is grouped for provenance. This reorganizes the reading routes without rewriting the historical mathematics or discarding additions. Original historical witnesses and exact source-image crops remain distinct from modern transcriptions and processed image derivatives. Stable Gauss family: 10.5281/zenodo.20410934. The earlier GitHub reader release remains an additional route with its dated versions. Artifact-specific rights and original-source attribution remain in force. The smaller reading PDFs use processed image derivatives: some large photographic source controls have reduced resolution or grayscale encoding. Exact original color and full-resolution PDF bytes are preserved in the optional lossless ZIP. Model credits: Historical text is by Gauss and the identified historical editors. Modern transcription and translation are AI-assisted, with model and effort identities retained where actually recorded; unknown backend identities are not inferred. The separate commentary credits above identify its AI author, model and effort. Reading curation and PDF size reduction for this edition: ChatGPT, observed GPT-6.1 Sol, Ultra. See the current reading guide for these distinctions and package restoration qualifications. Optional archive restore helpers To restore both archives using Python 3, download all 76 parts and these four helpers into one folder. Keep their names. The scripts use the manifest, create restored_archives, refuse to overwrite an output, and verify the downloaded parts and restored original identities. Python restoration was tested successfully; PowerShell syntax was checked, while runtime testing was blocked by script execution policy. Use Python if that policy applies on your computer.
